It makes me so happy to know that whenever I share these links on free education, books and resources online, people not only learn a lot from it but are often generous enough to share it with their friends and other folks online. It goes positively viral. That’s the beauty…

Magnetic force
The Earths magnetic force is measured to 0.6 Gauss. There are 10.000 Gauss in one Tesla, making the Earths magnetic force to 60 microtesla (0.000006 Tesla)
At the car dumps, they use a crane with a large magnetic disc to lift cars and move them easily from one place to another. This magnetic disc has a force of 0.2 Tesla.
An average MRI-machine at a hospital will have magnetic force equal to 1.5 Tesla, and machine’s that are 3.0 tesla are becoming increasingly common. Some research labs have 7.0 tesla machines, and it is common to use 12.0 tesla machines to research on rats and such (as the machine has to be very large to have this strength, it is too expensive to make one large enough for use on humans).

House MD and fMRI’s
ok so. The series “House MD” portrayes a lot of outrageous medical cases, and most of the time I am blissfully unaware of the possible phallacies. However, once in a while I come across things that are just not possible.
Like the episode with the “psychopath.” Where 13 diagnoses psychopathy by “noticing” that the patient bypasses “the limbic system” when talking about emotional things. It is just REDICULOUS. It is true that the limbic system is implemented in emotional processing, but it is far from the only thing it does! Oh lord! Just to be clear, you cannot diagnose psychopathy by checking if the limbic system is inactive. THe fact is, it will not be inactive unless it is damaged in some way, physically. Second of all, she did this off the bat looking at the picture feed from the machine straight away. This is practically impossible. There is LOADS of informational processing happening in the brain at all times, lots of activation. And there are a lot of things to correct for when looking at fMRI data, not to mention that the MRI machine doesn’t take pictures of all the brain at any given point. It makes images of slices of the brain that might be 5mm apart, and captures these slices every so an so many seconds, not miliseconds. Meaning that the action seen right after a question is asked, doesn’t necessarily represent the activation that leads to the answer of the question. so, no, not possible.
Second, the episode where the sick dude holds a bunch of people hostage. And House takes him into the MRI room… without stripping everyone of metals theya re wearing. MAJOR FAULT! An MRI is a giant superconducting magnet, any metal taken into the room where the machine is in will get sucked into the machine by magnetic force. A paperclip that meets the magnetic field, will hit the machine with the speed of approxomately 64km/h by a 1.5 tesla machine, becasue the magnetic field becomes progressively stronger the closer you get to the machine. So, when the guy actually lays down on the MRI bed, HOLDING a gun… it makes me cry a little. The gun would get sucked into the machine within 3 feet of the machine. And once it touched the machine, they would probably not be able to get it out of it again with only 3 men. so, no, not possible.
In the same episode. House takes the computer INTO the room of the MRI, taking it out of the protective barrier. This would fry the computer’s electrics. It would not work in there, and bits of it would also get SUCKED into the machine again, making it impossible. so no, not possible.

Back again
Hi guys. Sorry for not posting anything for so long. I haven’t really been in the mood to post anything here in a while. My personal tumblr is hyperactive, but I’m afraid I have been neglecting this one a little.
Now that Uni is back on and I’ve properly started on projects relating scietific stuff, this place will probably get more posts.
I plan on making a “House MD vs fMRI facts” post. I love the series, unfortunately, knowing about fMRI’s makes some of the things that happen in that series just too rediculous. So, I will make that post probably by the end of the day. Just wanted to inform you that I have not forgotten this place :)

Video in Norwegian.
Our security course comprised of making us really understand the strength of the magnet. The human body cannot feel the strength of the magnet, so some tools have been made to help illustrate it.
One is a wrench on a rope. Which students in turn try to shift in an angle. This is very hard. The second is a tennis ball in a net, which has been filled with metal.

Re-arranging!
Sorry for the spamming guys, it will be like this for a couple of days.
This is due to me chaning what is my primary Tumblr, and the only way to do it is to change the names of my tumblr’s around and do some reposting. So I’ve started this grouling task!
So, allinmybrain is the name of my primary tumblr, but it has taken the place of Dr-Mowinckel. Hopefully I’ll be done with it in a couple of days. If I didn’t have a post-limit I would have gladly done it all today!

Finally, a pin-up calendar for geeks
If anyone finds this for sale, let me know!
via Geekosystem:
Medical imaging firm EIZO wanted to come up with a catchy giveaway that highlighted their expertise in “high-precision displays for the examination and diagnosis of radiographs.” The result, dreamt up by German ad firm BUTTER: A pin-up calendar in which women, truly, truly bear all. As the promotion concept puts it, “Very popular among craftsmen but quite new for medics: Pin-up calendars. At last, one which shows absolutely every detail.”

fMRI as a lie detector = stupidity →
I can’t believe that they are doing this.
An fMRI cannot be used as a lie detector. Even if we can see activity in the brain, it is impossible to say what is actually going on in there! Every brain is pretty unique, even if the main areas are approximately in the places, there are HUGE variations.

There has never been any device that has been reliable as a lie detector….
